Analysis

Each municipality in Tamaulipas has its own municipal coat of arms. The adoption of local coats of arms started around the '80's as typical throughout the Federation. The government of the state asked the municipalities over the years to adopt their own coat of arms, in practice all coat of arrms being adopted by 2000.

Some of the more common themes in the creations of local municipal coats of arms are agriculture (cotton, corn, wheat, etc.) and cattle-raising, the basic elements of survival. Mountains are also frequently depicted, as well as flora, sometimes other fauna; also in agricultural nature, agave is seen. Bridges, rivers/dams, and churches are also very frequently seen, signifying the importance of water to people and faith. Fruits are sometimes also seen. About five municipalities depict José de Escandón, 1st Count of Sierra Gorda, or his coat of arms. In the southeast, petroleum symbols are seen.

But by far the most interesting thing is that a good number of these municipalities have the same format. They have the sameness to the coat of arms of the State: having rolled edges, being divided into two horizontal halves.

It should be noted that all images of the Municipal Coats of Arms can be seen in the General and Historic Archive of the State of Tamaulipas.
