The coat of arms of Altamira was adopted in 1977, during the administration of Municipal President Armando Martínez Sánchez (1975-1977). The call for submissions was launched on 1 November and closed 22 days later, with works reviewed from the 23rd to the 25th of that month. First place received 10,000 pesos; second 5,000 pesos; and third 3,000 pesos for their designs, with the winning design by Arturo Villafuerte Bedolla originally from Michoacán being named as the winner on 26 November.
Above the shield is a ribbon reading CIUDAD ALTAMIRA. The sides depict colonial ironworks and green triangles; an ironwork is also seen at the bottom along with a small shield quartered in white and blue. There are three horizontal sections, the lower and upper sections being divided in half. The upper-left section depicts the colonizer José de Escandón, 1st Count of Sierra Gorda, and a horse; the upper-right section depicts the Santiago Apóstol Church. Both upper sections have a band with 12 white and blue rectangles, signifying the old Villa and new city. The middle section depicts an open book, reading on the left "Se fundó en 1749 Nuestra Sra. de las Caldas"; to the right "Se declaró en 1977 Ciudad Altamira, Tamps." The lower-left section depicts a row of 3 trees (corn plants for agriculture) and a field to its side, with a zebu bull in front standing on grass for the livestock of the municipality. The original versions depicted the Sierra Madre Oriental mountains and a fish in the section. The lower-right section depicts three round storage tanks over water, a symbol of the famed petrochemical industry in the city.
