It appears Matamoros does not use a municipal flag.

The coat of arms of Matamoros was adopted in 1973, being organized in a contest by the Society of History, Geography, and Statistics of Matamoros. Humberto Jiménez, being 18 at the time, was recognized as the winner of the contest and is today the coat of arms of the Municipality. Clearly, it is partially influenced by the 1950 coat of arms.
Over a scroll representing leather for cattle-raising, at the bottom it reads 28 de Enero de 1826, the date of the name change to Matamoros. The shield placed over the center has a white band at the top reading "H. Matamoros, Tam."; under this are three sections in the National Colors, each depicting a laurel wreath for historic deeds and in the center, the year 1851, when it obtained the title of Heroic, Loyal, and Undefeated. Under this are four sections, two on each half. The upper-left section depicts the sun and its rays for life; the upper-right section depicts the sea that it borders. The lower-left section depicts a hand over soil, representing the harvest. The lower-right section depicts an open book and a torch for culture. Finally, in the center is a cylinder: the upper half depicts a factory with chimneys for industry and the lower half depicts an atom for science.

A coat of arms was adopted in 1957, during the Municipal Presidency term of Augusto G. Cárdenas Montemayor (1955-1957). The shield is divided in two by a band, reading "H. MATAMOROS. TAM." A cotton plant goes through this band and is seen on both halves. The left side of the lower half depicts two interlocking hands for friendship; under this is grass on each side of water, representing the Rio Grande as its border. The right side depicts three laurel wreaths; over each one is a word from the title "LEAL INVICTA HEROICA". Under these is the year 1851, when it obtained this title.

The first coat of arms was adopted on 31 March 1950, being designed by Juan Sánchez Osuna, also the designer of the Cd. Victoria coat of arms later on. A year before this, he created a coat of arms to use in his Informative Guide of H. Matamoros, Tam. The border reads "H. MATAMOROS. TAMAULIPAS."; in the middle is the year 1852, when the decree for its name change was delivered from the presidency by the minister of war to the municipal government. Above is a ribbon in the National Colors reading its title of "LEAL, INVICTA Y HEROICA". The upper half depicts three laurel wreaths for historic deeds over white. The lower half depicts a cloud, the sky, a ploughed field, and the river as the background; to the left, a bud of cotton symbolizing the important agricultural industry at the time; a petroleum tower added by the Municipal Government for the growing industry; a caduceus of Mercury for commerce; and the International Bridge crossing over the water. Above this is a compass rose with an arrow through it indicating it as the Northeasternmost city of Mexico.

The shield is divided into sections by the shape of the sun and its rays. At the bottom is a cotton plant, important at the time of its creation. The upper-left section depicts a factory and a cogwheel for industry. The upper-right section depicts a cow and corn plant, for cattle-raising and agriculture respectively. The upper section depicts the international bridge over the Rio Grande, demolished in 1962. Above this is a rectangle reading "H. MATAMOROS TAMAULIPAS". Above the shield is the winged hat of Mercury, protector of humanity and commerce symbolizing the important industries of the city.
