The coat of arms was adopted by the council under Decree N°24 on 10 June 1961, expedited by the Local Congress of the State of Tamaulipas. It was designed by Victorino Ochoa González, head of Population of the Municipality. The Republican Council of 1961-1963 chose his design through a call for submissions throughout the municipality. The coat of arms has the same format as the coat of arms of the State, having a scrolled border. It is divided into two halves; the upper half is divided into two. The upper-left section depicts the connection of the San Juan River into the Rio Grande, with two houses on its left bank. The upper-right section depicts the Monument to the Santa Gertrudis battle, fought against the French and boosting Republican morale. Between both halves is a shield depicting the Santa Ana church. The lower half depicts the Marte R. Gómez Dam and its tall Sugar Monument.
