|The British South Africa Company united Mashonaland and Matabeleland to form Southern Rhodesia which became a self-governing colony in 1923. It later was federated with Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland in 1953 as the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Upon the dissolving of the federation in 1964, Southern Rhodesia became Rhodesia. Three years after the Unilateral Declaration of Independence, the Rhodesia 1968 tri-color flag was adopted. In 1979, the country became known as Zimbabwe-Rhodesia.
