Ian MacDonald - - Calgary, Alberta, Canada

I was born Ian James Kenneth MacDonald in Singapore, second son of a Scottish engineer. With short stops in Texas, Aberdeen, Jakarta, Amsterdam, and Perth Australia, I finally finished school in Calgary, Alberta, before going to the University of Calgary to study engineering. Someone told me geologists get paid as well as engineers and take a year less to finish to university, so I switched into geological engineering, graduated in 2002 and have worked well-sites in Alberta and Saskatchewan ever since.

All that travelling as kid meant a whole lotta flags to live under, and my Dad made sure I had them all. That inspired a keen interest in vexillology, which always invokes guffaws from the roughnecks on the rigs. Still, there's often nothing much to do on down time on the well-site, so editing pages for FOTW seems like a useful pastime, and a whole lot cheaper than heading to the village tavern. Other hobbies include running, choral singing when I am in the city, and keeping my bright blue Ford Ranger as clean as possible when I am on well-site.
