In May of 1812 on the top of Catamount Hill, the Loyalists of Colrain, Massachusetts raised the first United States flag to fly over a public schoolhouse. The flag they flew recognized the admission of Tennessee and Ohio, even though the stars had not been officially added to the flag.
From the commemorative stone marker on Catamount Hill in Colrain, Massachusetts:

FROM A LOG SCHOOL HOUSE WHICH
STOOD ON THIS SPOT
