Haren municipality

Population (1 Jan 2003): 19.017; area: 50,70 km². Settlements: Haren (seat), Essen, Glimmen, Noordlaren, Onnen, Paterswolde (part).
Haren is the southeastern part of Groningen city. It has some lakes and several recreational facilities and even a wilderness.
The unofficial old flag was BW horizontal. The new flag contains the municipal Coat of Arms with the prominent place of the bell. This was used to call the citizens of the 8 villages for meetings (like in Franekeradeel). The top left quarter is the Coat of Arms of Groningen, to which the Gorecht region belonged since 1460, of which Haren formed part.
Jarig Bakker, 9 November 1999

The municipal administration of Haren informs me that the flag is of their own design and was established in the meeting of Burgemeester and Wethouders on 6 november 1972. The original drawing and construction sheet shows a flag proportioned 9:14, white with blue stripes along the flywise edges proportioned 1:4:1, and placed in the center of the flag the municipal arms. Those arms, as granted 12 januari 1914 are: Azure, a silver bell, a "free quarter" a double eagle sable with on its breast a heart-shield silver a fess vert. The shield crowned with a five-leaved crown.
The bell reminds of the eight medieval "marken" the municipal territory consisted of in 1914 (Haren, Noordlaren, Onnen, Glimmen, Hemmen, Dilgt, Essen en Helpman). At one time law stipulated that citizens of a mark were to be called to meetings by "klock-treckinge" (chiming). To avoid confusion with other, similar Arms (see Franeker), the Arms of Groningen were added too refer to the time that city owned the Gorecht.

This flag was not official, but was frequently used. The colors have been derived from the municipal coat of arms in reverse order. Source: Sierksma's Nederlands Vlaggenboek, 1962. For a view of the Coat of Arms see Ralf Hartemink's site.
