Hemau Coat of Arms

Shield Azure a knight in armour Or holding a lance of the same with assault flag Argent parted by a cross Gules by his dexter hand and a shield Argent charged with a cross patty Gules by his sinister hand, mounted on a horse salient Argent with horse rug Or.
Meaning:
Hemau was already mentioned as a city in 1326. The knight is a representation of St. George, patron saint of the Benedictine Prüfening Monastery, to which the local parish belonged until 1803, and of the Bishopric of Bamberg as its liege as well. The arms are based on city seals. Already the oldest seal print from 1324 displayed the current pattern, also two prints from the 16th century. The pattern had been unique in the late 14th century. During the 19th century the tinctures changed and a green base sometimes was added. The current tinctures are in use since 1609.
