Elsterwerda Coat of Arms

Shield Gules, a sinister facing magpie trippant proper on a mount Vert issuant from base, in chief three fleur-de-lis Argent ordered 2:1.
Meaning:
Elsterwerda was first mentioned in 1211. The magpie (German: Elster) is a punning element, referring to the Elster River, co-name-giver of the county. The fleurs-de-lis are taken from the family arms of the Lords of Köckeritz, local rulers from at least 1326 until 1512, when the city was conquered by Duke Georg of Saxony, as the Köckeritz kin members earned their living by robbery.
