The municipality of Thorigné-Fouillard (8,575 inhabitants in 2019; 1,358 ha) is located north-east of Rennes. The municipality is composed of the two former villages of Thorigné and Fouillard.

Several attempts at unification of the two components (1866, 1867, 1902, 1928) failed. In 1975, 337 inhabitants of Fouillard (out of 480 voters) asked the Préfet to attach the "hamlet", then part of Liffré, to Thorigné-sur-Vilaine. The procedure ended in a refusal in 1979. The municipality of Thorigné-sur-Vilaine relaunched a new file in March 1980; the Decree incorporating Fouillard to Thorigné-sur-Vilaine was signed on 4 December 1981, Tne new municipality adopted in 1982 the name of Thorigné-Fouillard.
