Presentation of Rennes

The municipality of Rennes (Breton, Roazhon; 220,488 inhabitants in 2019; 5,039 ha) is located at the confluence of rivers Ille and Vilaine, 300 km west of Paris and 210 km east of Brest.

Rennes originates in a small Gallic village named Condate. Together with Vannes and Nantes, it was one of the major towns of the Duchy of Brittany. From the early 16th century until the French Revolution, Rennes was a parliamentary, administrative and garrison town of the historic province of Brittany of the Kingdom of France. After the destructive fire of 1720, the medieval wooden downtown was partially rebuilt in stone. Labeled a "Town of Art and History", Rennes has preserved an important medieval and classical heritage within its historic downtown, composed of over 90 buildings protected as historic monuments.
In the 1950s, Rennes has grown in importance through rural exodus and modern industrial development. During the 1980s, the town became one of the main centres in telecommunication and high technology industry, being now a significant centre of digital innovation.

Flag of Rennes

The most commonly used flag in Rennes is the flag of Brittany, a proper town flag being rarely seen.
The (historical?) official flag of Rennes (photo, 1971, at the city hall after the victory of the soccer team Le stade Rennais in the French Cup; photo, 1984, during the Commemorations of the fortieth anniversary of the Liberation of Rennes; observation, 1999) is white, plain ermine, with the municipal coat of arms, sumrounted by a golden mural crown and appended the War Cross.

The banner of arms of Rennes (photo, photo, photo) is sometimes used in unofficial contexts. The design of the ermine spots may vary depending on the manufacturer.
The arms, "Six pallets argent and sable a chief argent five ermine spots sable", are featured in the Armorial Général (image).
