Background

AbaQulusi Local Municipality is located within the Zululand District in northern KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africaa. It is named after the AbaQulusi, a Zulu clan whose descendants pledged allegiance to local Zulu royal homesteads.  The headquarters of the municipality are located in Vryheid, a coal mining and agricultural service centre, which is the largest town in the area.   Vryheid was the capital of the Nieuwe Republiek, a Boer republic established in 1884.

The municipal emblem is a traditional Zulu shield superimposed on a crossed Zulu spear and knobkerrie in saltire, in front of which is a traditional clay beer pot (ukhamba).  The name of the municipality appears on a red scroll below.
