The first flag for Bolingbrook was designed by one of the first Village Trustees, William Plimmer. The name Bolingbrook was written in script across the top of the flag in gold thread. It stood out against the kelly green background. Heavy gold fringe edged the flag. Two bars crossed in the middle as a the key symbol of what was thought to be important “pathways of the past and future,” which became the motto of the fledgling Village. The past signified the route of I-55 (Rt. 66) from Joliet to Chicago. The future path connected Argonne National Labs and Fermi National Accelerator Lab is today. The “Pathways” name was adopted by many events as the Village grew, and survives in 2015 as the name of the annual parade. The original silk flag never flew outside from a flag pole, but is still honored by hanging in the Board Room at the Town Center. A second flag is kept at Fire Station #1.

In the 1980s it became apparent that the silk flag was too expensive to duplicate. Its pathways symbology was also losing its meaning. The Public Relations Committee of the Village, headed by residents Marty Wallach and Greg Coy, was asked to submit designs for a new flag and motto. From among hundreds of suggestions, the motto: “Bolingbrook, a place to grow” was chosen. A new and more modern appearing flag, with flowing stripes of blue, white, and green was approved. The design used a font in which a lowercase “b” started the word Bolingbrook. When Roger Claar was first elected mayor in 1986, he proclaimed that “Bolingbrook is a capital city” and that all future flags and the Village logo would be spelled with an uppercase “B.”
