The city emblem and the flag were adopted on Jul 4th 2006 by Notice No 66 and 70. The white flag has a green and a red two color city emblem in the center. The city emblem is a stylized kanji 喜 Ki of Kitakata. The red color stands for a creation of the history and the tradition, the green color for a harmony with the nature and the coexistence. It represents an image of the citizen who seeks for a rich and healthy farming mountain villages and a vigorous life, a tourist city and freely jumps into the bright future.  It also represents a soar of the city and the citizen. The flag proportion is 2:3. The height of the emblem is 3/5 height of the flag.

The stylised hiragana ki forms a circular shape with points at the top and bottom, and wings ("airfoils"?) at the top. The 'wings' represent progress, while the circle represents harmony/reconciliation. The light orange colour is literally "skin colour".
