Le Mans Métropole (205,113 inhabitants in 2016; 26,710 ha) is composed 19 municipalities.
The Communauté urbaine du Mans was established in 1971 by Allonnes, Arnage, La Chapelle-Saint-Aubin, Coulaines, Le Mans, Rouillon, Sargé-lès-le-Mans and Yvré-l'Évêque. Mulsanne joined the community in 2004, which was renamed to Le Mans Métropole the same year. Aigné, Champagné, La Milesse, Ruaudin and Saint-Saturnin joined in 2013, while Chaufour-Notre-Dame, Fay, Trangé, Pruillé-le-Chétif and Saint-Georges-du-Bois joined in 2017.

Pays du Mans (46 municipalities; 256,000 inhabitants, 815 km2), created in 2002, is an intermunicipal structure (syndicat mixte ouvert, unrestricted public-sector association), gathering five communautés de communes (Portes du Maine, Rives-de-Sarthe, Bocage Cénomans, Sud-Est du Pays manceau, Orée de Bercé-Bélinois), and the communauté urbaine Le Mans Métropole.
