Presentation of Donhierro

The municipality of Donhierro (115 inhabitants in 2010; 1,722 ha; unofficial website) is located in the southwestern corner of Segovia Province, on the border with Ávila Province, 70 km from Segovia.

Donhierro was mentioned in the middle of the 13th century as Don Fierro, probably alluding to its resettler, of possible Riojan or Basque origin. At the time, the village had two more hamlets, Botalhorno and Salvador de Cuéllar, deserted long ago. Donhierro belonged to the Community of the Village and Land of Arévalo.

Symbols of Donhierro

The research memoir supporting the proposed flag and arms of Donhierro was approved in a Decree adopted on 6 October 2006 by the Municipal Council, signed on 23 October 2006 by the Mayor, and published on 14 November 2006 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 219, p. 21,459 (text).
There is, unfortunately, no description of the symbols in the Decree.

The flag hoisted on the Town Hall (photo) appears to be vertically divided red-yellow with the municipal coat of arms in the middle.

El Norte de Castilla, 3 March 2006, reports the project of designing municipal symbols. According to the Mayor, proposed charges for the coat of arms were a grill representing St. Lawrence, the village's patron saint; a pine representing the natural environment; and a representation of river Adaja watering the village.
