"البريد المصري" (English: Egyptian Post), sometimes referred to as Egyptian
National Post Organization (ENPO) was established formally on January 2, 1865
although in modern times, its direct predecessor was a postal office by Italian
Carlo Meratti, living in Alexandria, who established a post office to send and
receive mail to and from foreign countries as early as 1821. After he passed
away, his nephew, Titokini, established Posta Europea with another partner. This
company, a public trust, that already had offices in several cities (mainly due
to the railroad expansion in the country starting in 1855-1856), was purchased
by the government on October 29, 1864, the date recognized as the foundation,
although it started operations the next year.
