Münchsmünster Coat of Arms

Shield Azure, on top of a triplemount Vert a church Argent with one tower and roofs Gules.
The church, a minster, is a canting element and is reminding on the name giving Benedictine Münchsmünster Monastery. The arms are derived from the seal of the monastery, which had been owner of the local district (Bavarian: Hofmark) and the low level cognisance, until it declined in the 16th century. Founded in the 8th century, it was devastated by a Hungarian raid. Secularised by Duke Arnulf of Bayern it lost its economic base in the 10th century. It was revived in the 12th century by the Benedictine Order, transferred to the Jesuit Order of Ingolstadt in 1599 and to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, which established a commandery in 1783. Finally it was acquired by Bayern in 1814 and demolished a bit later.
