Schönthal Coat of Arms

Shield Or a burning heart Gules pierced by two flashes Sable in saltire, in base a fess wavy Sable.
Meaning:
Heart and flashes are the main attribute of St. Augustine of Hippo and the symbol of the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine (Latin:Ordo eremitarum sancti Augustini abbreviated OESA) as well. Founded in 1250 by the Hermits of St. William the monastery was transferred to the Augustinians in 1263. The friars since then had a formative influence in the village. The monastery was secularised during the Protestant Reformation but restored in 1669 by Elector Ferdinand Maria of Bayern. The black fess wavy is representing the Schwarzach River.
