Kamenz Coat of Arms

Meaning:
A local fortress, located near a ford crossing the Schwarze Elster River, existed already since around 1200. The Lords of Vesta, imperial commissionaires, established an extended lordship by forest clearance as vassals of the Kings of Böhmen. They called themselves later Lords of Kamenz. Kamenz was founded before 1225 and was called a city since 1318. The city acquired numerous estates and became a member of the Alliance of six Upper Lusatian Cities, also known as Lusatian League. In 1547 the alliance was punished by later King Ferdinand I and sentenced to give away its estates and privileges for a while. The arms are based on a city seal from 1346, which displayed however a wing as heraldic symbol of the lords on the inescutcheon. The wing was replaced by the Bohemian lion in 1434.
