Introduction

Anhalt is a small former German Duchy on the River Elbe southwest of Berlin. (...) It became a republic after World War One. After World War Two it was combined with the former Prussian Province of Saxony to become the state (Land) of Sachsen-Anhalt (abolished [1952], but then later re-established [1991]).

Norman Martin, 7 Feb 2001

From 1918 till 1945 Anhalt was a Land. According to Chamber's World Gazetteer 1954 it was a German constituent republic, and until 1918 a duchy. Duke Joachim Ernst abdicated on 12 November 1918, after which Anhalt became a republic.

Civil Flag

Landesflagge

Horizontal tricolour red-green-white, in use until 1935 with Coat-of-arms displaying a bear on a brick wall. The 1918 constitution, article 1, stated that the traditional red-green-white flag of Anhalt remained unchanged, so this was the official colour disposition. Rosenfeld 1883 reported a quite unusual (but heraldically correct) red-white-green flag for Anhalt. I have no other evidence for such a colour disposition.

The constitution of the Freistaat Anhalt of 18 July 1919 confirmed the colours red-green-white [of the Duchy of Anhalt from 1863-1918], that were used until 1935. (...) After 1945 the Anhalt colours were not used officially; however, as already mentioned, in 1990 they were used inofficially for some time.

The flag adopted in 1863, readopted on 18 July 1919, abolished in 1935 and used unofficially in 1990.

State Flag

Landesdienstflagge

The Anhalt state flag 1924-1935 (...) was the tricolour with the arms [same as those used briefly in 1990], but I do not know about the size and exact position of the arms. I have no information how the state service flag looked like — all my sources just show the simple tricolour as Landesflagge (civil flag).

As an alternative to red-green-white, simple green-white was also used for a long time. Even in 1928 the Große Brockhaus encyclopedia said:

Land's colours: red-green-white, used in the Land's flag in horizontal stripes; however in most cases just green and white are used.
