About the district

The Partido de Moreno has a population of about 462,242 and sits in the western suburbs of Buenos Aires city.

The district is named Moreno in homage to the Argentine lawyer, journalist and revolutionary Mariano Moreno, one of the most important figures during the time of the May Revolution in 1810.

Description of the flag

On the 156th anniversary of the founding of the Partido de Moreno, the Municipality announced the winning design of the flag from the competition held to select a representative for the district.

This flag, proposed by Moreno resident Leonardo Chamorro, was chosen by the community with 51.6% of the votes from among eleven finalists. On Friday, October 23, Mariel Fernández met with Leonardo, congratulating and thanking him for his participation and dedication to the local emblem.

Regarding the design of the new flag, the light blue represents peace and commitment to nature, while the dark blue alludes to the Reconquista River, symbolizing a rich past and the building of a promising future. As for the elements, the Ombú tree represents the historical significance of Moreno's center; its leafy canopy symbolizes the capacity to protect and welcome all; the soil represents the responsibility and wealth of the Partido; an open book represents education; and the deep roots represent the individuals, families, and ancestors who laid the foundations of the Partido. The circle represents the unity and equality of every individual and neighbor; the gear, the strength of labor; the wheat, the abundance of Moreno's soil; the rails, the railroad that gave rise to the district; and the caduceus, the symbol of commerce. "I believe the flag represents the identity of the people of Moreno because it contains symbols that describe them, both in their values and their activities. It recognizes their richness, past, present, and future potential," stated its creator.

The local Secretariat of Culture noted that "The flag occupies a symbolic role of unity within a community and allows for the formation and development of its own identity. In the year of General Manuel Belgrano, in which we celebrate the 250th anniversary of his birth and the 200th anniversary of his death, we consider it very important to have our own flag for the Municipality of Moreno, created through a cultural, pluralistic, and equitable process where everyone can participate. That is why we have invited the entire Moreno community to participate in the creation of our first local emblem."
