The Community of communes of the Pays Châtelleraudais had been created in 1993 with 7 communes: Châtellerault, Cenon-sur-Vienne, Colombiers, Monthoiron, Naintré, Thuré, Vouneuil-sur-Vienne. The communes of Archigny, Availles-en-Châtellerault and Bonneuil-Matours joined the Community in 1997.
The Communauté d'agglomération du Pays Châtelleraudais was formed on December 12, 2000 by transformation of the Community of communes. Saint-Sauveur and Senillé (who in 2016 would merge into one commune) joined at the end of 2012, Bellefonds in 2013.
In 2017, the inter-municipal structure expanded to 47 municipalities by integrating the Communauté de communes du Lencloîtrais, Communauté de communes des Vals de Gartempe et Creuse, and Communauté de communes des Portes du Poitou. It took the name Communauté d'agglomération du Grand Châtellerault and adopted a new logo.

It consists of the following communes: Châtellerault, Angles-sur-l'Anglin, Antran, Archigny, Availles-en-Châtellerault, Bellefonds, Bonneuil-Matours, Buxeuil, Cenon-sur-Vienne, Cernay, Chenevelles, Colombiers, Coussay-les-Bois, Dangé-Saint-Romain, Doussay, Ingrandes, Leigné-les-Bois, Leigné-sur-Usseau, Lencloître, Lésigny, Leugny, Mairé, Mondion, Monthoiron, Naintré, Orches, Les Ormes, Ouzilly, Oyré, Pleumartin, Port-de-Piles, La Roche-Posay, Saint-Christophe, Saint-Genest-d'Ambière, Saint-Gervais-les-Trois-Clochers, Saint-Rémy-sur-Creuse, Savigny-sous-Faye, Scorbé-Clairvaux, Senillé-Saint-Sauveur, Sérigny, Sossais, Thuré, Usseau, Vaux-sur-Vienne, Vellèches, Vicq-sur-Gartempe, Vouneuil-sur-Vienne.

The flag is white with the logo (photo, 2022) .
