Teterow was first mentioned in 1272. Lord Nikolaus I fo Werle is said to be thefounder who granted city rights according to the Schwerin pattern. The fortified city became a possession of the Dukes of Mecklenburg in 1436. Teterow had been seat of the namesake county from 1952 ubtil 1994. The arms are based on a city seal with prints since 1353. Helmet and peacock feathers are the crest of the arms of the Lords of Werle. Star and crosses are mere decorations. The tinctures were fixed in 1858. The flag colours had been taken from the local coat of arms.

The flag was in use since the 30ies of the 20th century, was abolished in times of GDR and re-established after German reuninon or shortly before and was confirmed in 1997 by Minister of Interior of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The arms were granted on 10 April 1858 by Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Both were published in the Municipal Roll of Arms Mecklenburg-Vorpommern as no.57
