Coat of Arms

Shield Argent, a sighthound salient Sable, crowned and collared Or.
Meaning:
Lord Ludwig of Windheim and Windeck donated Windheim Castle in 1278 to the Cistercian Ebrach Abbey. The town became seat of a Cistercian district and a new castle for the abbots was built in 1728. Thus local court seals from the 17th and 18th century displayed the arms of the abbey with boar and crozier. The pattern without crown was first mentioned in 1810 in a seal and a painting without tinctures. The sighthound (German: Windhund) is a canting element. The pattern displayed the family arms of the Lords of Windeck and Windheim. The coronet was omitted later and replaced by the collar, was however added again in 1966. The family arms are known from seals from the 13th and 14th century.
