Located in Yamagata City Yamagata Prefecture and established in 1949. The embroidered ceremonial flag has navy blue background with a gold symbol mark in the center and gold kanji university name written horizontally and gold fringe. The university flag has Tokiwa color (evergreen) with a white symbol mark in the center and white kanji university name written horizontally. The symbol mark of Yamagata University was adopted in 2001 through public solicitation as an appropriate symbol for the further development of the university and for enhancing the sense of unity among students and faculty members as the university entered the 21st century. The work by Mariko Chiba, a fourth-year student at the Faculty of Education (admitted in 1998), was supplemented by then-Associate Professor Naoto Wada of the Faculty of Education. The motif is the kanji initial "山" of 山形大学Yamagata University, and the color "Tokiwa" =evergreen color represents the lush green environment that symbolizes Yamagata Prefecture. The design represents the wish that Yamagata University will become more vibrant and energetic in the future. (Source)
