Thiais (32,006 inhabitants, 643 ha) is a commune in the Val-de-Marne department, in the southern suburbs of Paris, France.
Human settlement appears in the Neolithic period. In Roman times, human presence is further attested by structures and coins. From the 5th century onwards, the village was attached to the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. This village was mentioned in the 9th century in the Irminon Polyptych under the name Theodaxio. It was only in the 13th century that it became independent and was endowed with a church. The established families acquired individual farms.
In 1225, the parish of Choisy was created. The seigneury of Thiais was then called the seigneury of Thiais, Choisy, and Grignon, encompassing the three parishes.
In 1652, the village was burned down during the Fronde.
In December 1764, King Louis XV purchased the seigneury from the Abbey of Saint-Germain-des-Prés, then proceeded to divide it, creating the seigneury of Choisy attached to his château. The border between Thiais and Choisy was drawn along the road from Paris to Choisy, then along the Avenue de Villeneuve (now Avenue de Lattre-de-Tassigny) to include kitchen gardens. The seigneury was then known as "Thiais and Grignon." Consequently, in 1764, the remainder of the seigneury of Thiais was purchased from the king by François de Paule Lefèvre d'Ormesson. His coat of arms inspired the current city emblem.
After 1815, Thiais became home to numerous secondary residences of prominent Parisians. During the Siege of Paris in 1870, Thiais was the scene of fierce fighting on November 29 and 30, 1870. The Prussians constructed light defensive works.
In 1929, the Parisian cemetery of Thiais was established.
The town was significantly impacted by the arrival of the Rungis International Market in 1969. The Belle Épine shopping center was inaugurated in 1971, and its extension, Thiais Village, opened in 2007.
The coat of arms is blazoned: Azure, three garden lilies Argent, stalked and leaved Vert.

The flag of Thiais is horizontally divided dark blue over white: photo (2024), photo (2019), photo (2010).
It is often seen in twinning ceremonies, next to a vertically divided
red and yellow flag for Einbeck.
