Rosny-sous-Bois (45,947 inhabitants, 591 ha) is a commune in the eastern suburbs of Paris, France, in the Seine-Saint-Denis department.

The existence of a Merovingian village is attested by excavations carried out next to the Church of Sainte-Geneviève. In 1163, a papal bull from Alexander III mentions Rodoniacum: "the church with the surrounding village" and the land belonged to the Abbey of Sainte-Geneviève.

The town established a nursery school (salle d'asile) in 1834, the first name for what would become known as preschools.
The Boissière Redoubt was built in 1831 and formed part of the defenses of Paris.
The Fort of Rosny, built between 1840 and 1846, is one of the sixteen forts detached from the Thiers Wall that protected the capital.
The Paris-Mulhouse railway line opened in 1852, and the first station served Rosny in 1856.

During the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, the redoubt was used during the Siege of Paris, and the Avron plateau was a key location in the defense of Paris.
Between 1901 and 1920, the Fort of Rosny housed the 5th Battalion of the 4th Zouave Regiment, and since 1921 has housed the Technical and Scientific Center as well as other services of the National Gendarmerie, including the seat of the national centre of road information of the national gendarmerie.

Historically, the town developed through market gardening and gypsum mining. This mining ceased in the early 1990s, but left lasting damage, including the collapse of several buildings located above the quarries.
