While true, its more that "vaandel" derives from 
"vendel", which was a diminutive 
form of "vaan". "Vaan", then 
is related to "Fahne" 
in German.

usually replaced by "vaandel", but it does still occur on 
occasion.

"Banier" is related to French 
"bannière".

bandera-s etc.

Taken from French, 
"banderol" means "pennant", in more or less the same 
sense as "wimpel". Its 
no longer current, but you still see the occasional use for effect.
