The flag was found at http://www.co.brunswick.nc.us/county-flag.gif (no longer available). It consists of a green field, with the county seal and the date March 9, 1764 in yellow at the bottom. The seal has a rope-bordered outer white ring, and the center divided per saltire, blue above and below, yellow to the sides. On these quarters are a lighthouse, a factory complex, a fishing boat and a tractor.
According to this article by Star-News, the idea of a Brunswick County flag
stemmed from a suggestion by Brunswick County Commissioner Gene Pinkerton to
have three flagpoles at the county government complex. Of course, they believed
national and state flags would be suitable, but discussion emerged where the
consensus was that the third pole would have a county flag. County Manager John
Parker was tasked with designing this flag. He soon ordered it on May 31, and
then on July 19, 1989, the flag of Brunswick County was first hoisted by Parker,
the same day the flag was received.
Some residents suggested the
House of Brunswick coat of arms to be added to the flag, though turned down for
being intricate and expensive Instead of this, John Parker chose the county
seal. The date March 9, 1764 is the date when land was given to colonists for
Brunswick County. Supposedly according to the article, Brunswick didn't become a
county until 10 years later. Proportions 5:8.
