Bingöl was originally known as Cebel-cur, "the flowing mountain",
subsequently as Çapakçur, "flowing freshwater". According to Evliya Çelebiye,
Alexander the Great drank this water, which healed his body, and, subsequently
ordered to build a castle there. The place was later renamed to Mingöl ("Lake
region", "Thousand lakes") and eventually to Bingöl.

The new logo of Bingöl, unveiled in June 2020, features an eagle,
mountains and the sun.
The former logo, featuring a shepherd on a rainbow
background, used for more than 40 years, was deemed no longer representative of
the town's culture.
The eagle refers to Bingöl's popular culture and brave
people; the Bingöl's mountains are evoked in folkloric songs.

The municipality of Sancak (2,648 inhabitants in 2011) is located 50 km north of Bingöl.
The flag of Sancak (photo) is white with the municipality's emblem. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
The emblem shows a red map of Turkey with a Turkish flag planted on the
location of Sancak. This makes the flag canting since sancak means "a
banner" in Turkish; al sancak, "the banner", is one of the nicknmes of
the Turkish flag.
