I checked several online library catalogs and they give
the name as Idrisyn Oliver Evans. However it should be noted
that they also show that all the books listed for him use
«by I.O. Evans» rather than his full name.
Ned Smith, 2004
[eve][evi]Ivor’s father’s business already included flagmaking
in 1901 when he won the Autralian national flag competition (he was
not runner-up — there were five winners, with similar designs).
When Ivan took over the business, it made extensive commercial use
of his connection with the Australian flag, and published booklets
about the flag. While I don’t know how the booklets compared
to each other, they are the source of the extra layers of symbolism
often quoted by ANFA, and at least one
of them promotes Ivor as the sole designer of the flag. (See
this
article.)
Jonathan Dixon, 27 Feb 2008
Ivor Evans was a 14 year old schoolboy in 1901, when
he entered the competition. Ivor Evans was the son of Evan
Evans who founded a tent and canvasgoods business in Melbourne
in 1877 — flag making was part of the business. Ivor Evans
entered the business in 1913 and later became managing director of
Evan Evans Pty. Ltd. Evan Evans was a major flag manufacturer
throughout the 20th Century and may have been the largest
manufacturer in the 1950s. The company’s advertising material
highlighted Ivor Evan’s role as one of the flag designers,
in order to give the firm greater prestige. Ivor Evans is
understood to have had a son also named Ivor H. Evans,
who entered the business after World War II. Ivor Evans senior
died in 1960. I believe the company is no longer family owned and
it has diversified into corporate promotional materials —
I am not even sure if they still sell the Australian Flag.
Ralph Kelly, 28 Feb 2008
I see Evan Evans Flags Pty. Ltd., the family business, have
changed their website
to something even more dysfunctional than it already was.
If it still presents Ivor in the same way, I’m no longer able
to find it, though it may be in the parts of the pages that fall
outside my screen. Maybe I’m wrong, maybe it was that they
claimed the honour for the company,
as
they still do: «In 1901, we won the honour of
co-designing the Australian flag.»
