Analysis

Most municipalities in the State of Chiapas do not use a municipal coat of arms, and it can be attributed to a few reasons:
1. Local governments feel no need to adopt one.
2. There was no coordinated state government for Municipalities to adopt a coat of arms.
3. Since only colonial cities (in reality, only San Cristóbal de las Casas) historically adopted a coat of arms, there were no surrounding communities for a municipality to reference the idea from; Chiapas borders some states (Oaxaca and Tabasco) that do not have an extensive municipal heraldry system.

Of the communities that do have a municipal coat of arms, indigenous symbols are often seen. Symbols of the local economy, like bananas, coffee, cocoa; geography as waterfalls, mountains, sun, etc.; and for religion, churches are found. The namesake of a municipality is also often directly represented on municipal symbols. Also, symbols of fauna are seen because of its biodiversity. Some symbols also depict cows for cattle-raising; rivers as as source of water; and the Municipal Building usually as a historical monument. Palm trees are seen for its tropical environment. For agriculture, corn is seen as it is the basic aliment of the people. Fishing is also represented on some of these symbols.
