University of Thrace (website), established on 20 July 1982 in Edirne, is composed of 11 Faculties, 5 Schools, 9 Vocational Schools and 4 Institutes.
Some units were separated from the university to establish three new
universities: Çanakkale 18 March University (1992), Namik Kemal University and Kırklareli University (2006).
The flag of the university (photo,
photo,
photo) is dark golden yellow with the university's
emblem inscribed in a blue ring. On some flags (photo), the ring is white instead of blue. The flag (photo,
photo) is also used with a blue-gray background.
The former flag of the university (photo,
photo) was bright yellow with the
university's former emblem. The emblem was similar to the current one,
but with a blue background, the university's name in golden yellow and
the foundation year in black.
The emblem represents the Ekmekçioğlu Ahmet Paşa Bridge, one of the
eight bridges erected in the town of Edirne during the Ottoman period.
The bridge, built from 1607 to 1615 and restored in 2007, crosses rivers
Tundzha / Tunca and Meriç / Maritsa, connecting the historical town to
its summer suburbs, Karaağaç.
