Presentation of Faaa

The municipality of Faaa (19,719 inhabitants in 2012, therefore the most populous municipality in French Polynesia; 3,400 ha) is located in the suburbs of Papeete. Faaa has many mountains inland that can reach 1,500 m, including Mt. Marau, an extinct volcano.

Captain James Cook landed on Faaa when he came to Tahiti on his expedition.
The municipality is the political stronghold of independence leader Oscar Temaru who has served five times as President of French Polynesia (2004, 2005-2006, 2007-2009, and 2011-2013) and has been its Mayor since 1983.
