The coat of arms of Torreón was adopted on 7 April 1981 by the State Congress, under the administration of Municipal President Homero Héctor del Bosque Villarreal. It was designed by Francisco Fernández Torres in preparation for the 75th anniversary of the city; he was trusted with designing the symbol. The shield is scrolled, having at the top a tower (torreón) representative of the city's name. The border reads Torreón at the top; to the sides and bottom, the motto La Perla De La Laguna [The Pearl of the Lagoon]. The upper-left section depicts the contour of a tower combined with a person, remembering human settlement, and the sun above; a second profile view of a person is cut from the tower, replaced by a bud of cotton. The upper-right section depicts a factory for industry, as well as: (top) a bovine, cluster of grapes; (bottom) bales of cotton, and two crossed ears of wheat for agriculture. In the bottom section, the Nazas River and the hills that form the Huarache Canyon, with the sun rising from behind them; fishing nets from which the name of the river is derived are seen to its sides. A train can be seen crossing the river on a bridge, remembering its railroad history.
