      Meaning:
Germersheim had been a Free Imperial City. The privilehge was granted in 1276 by King Rudolf of Habsburg. The oldest city seals from 1412 and 1427 already displayed the one-headed imperial eagle. Germersheim became a possession of the Palatine Electorate in 1330, of France in 1793 and of Bayern in 1816. Nevertheless the seals remained the samne. In 1645 the eagle was first displayed with an additional crown by Caspar Merian. The eagle then had been black on a silver shield. The current tinctures were first mentioned in 1786.
