Description of the flag

The flag of Basrah Governorate was adopted in late 2022, probably around November, shortly after the adoption of its new logo. It carries a variant of the logo. Under the common textless logo is text in Arabic reading its name; and under this, "BASRAH GOVERNORATE" in English.

The logo was designed by German-based graphic designer Ahmed Al-Saad, who was commissioned by the governorate; it was announced to the public on 6 November 2022 on Facebook. The logo itself carries very similar symbolism to the old logo. Over an emblem that has a circular form, two palm leaves surround the central device symbolizing hard work and the palm industry, which the region is known for. In the center, a Babylonian date palm symbolizes the same (especially the date industry) and goes over two sails on waves, representing the fact that Basrah Governorate is the only Iraqi national port.

The emblem depicts two palm leaves to the sides for the palm industry, especially dates which the region is known for. Some water emerges from a ribbon which depicts the Iraqi flag, and has two sails and the sun over it, representing the importance of Basrah Governorate as the only Iraqi national port. Going over this is an oil derrick, symbol of the oil industry which has brought wealth to the region. Adoption date unknown.
