Description of the flag

From https://www.goskagit.com/news/:

Concrete’s towering industrial silos and the nearby jagged peak of Sauk Mountain will soon be featured prominently on the town flag. The Town Council this week unanimously approved the flag design submitted by Concrete High School senior Becky Azure during the summer design contest. “I really like living in Concrete and thought it would be awesome to be a part of it,” Azure said of the contest. “I’m thankful that I won because I love this town a lot.”

Her flag design features the gray silos pictured in front of a green Sauk Mountain, with both under blue skies.

“What I like about it is that it’s a clear combination of the natural and the built environment, and how that meshes in Concrete,” town Mayor Jason Miller said. Azure said the silos and mountain are the most recognizable features of the town. “They are two great landmarks and people from around the state and even other countries come to visit and see,” she said. Those landmarks, and the colors Azure used to represent them, also reflect the town’s roots.

In her entry, Azure said the gray of the silos represents the cement industry and the region’s rainy climate, while the green of Sauk Mountain represents the region’s forests, and the blue skies represent the region’s sparkling streams and occasional sunny days.

Her design was one of 114 entries submitted during the flag contest, which was handled by the town’s Economic Development Commission. The commission selected and presented the top four entries to the Town Council on Nov. 27, recommending Azure’s as the winning design, according to town documents. Azure, along with Miller, a planning commission representative and a professional designer, will next refine the design. Miller said the goal is to finalize the design, have flags made and get them on display as soon as possible in 2018.

Flag proposal

According to www.goskagit.com/news, the town of Concrete is asking the community to help design a flag reflecting what defines the town.

The flag design contest kicked off Friday at the 10th July 2017 annual Concrete Youth Activity, held at Veteran's Memorial Park.

The contest is open to residents of all ages within the Concrete School District. The town is accepting designs through Oct. 1.

Concrete Mayor Jason Miller said he was inspired to launch the contest in part by the city of Bellingham's flag, which was developed through a contest the Bellingham Downtown Partnership held in 2015. The Concrete Economic Development Commission will review entries this fall and plans to provide the Town Council with four finalists in December, he said.

The council will select and announce the winner in January.
