Description of the flag

The new flag of Nixa is based on a city branding-based seal adopted in 2022. Because the flag adopted in 2017 had integrated the former city logo and had no aspects of the 2022 branding, several new flags including the city logo were designed by Director of Communications Drew Douglas and Drury University graphic design professor Matt Noblett according to NAVA’s Good Flag, Bad Flag guidelines. Six designs were presented to the city council, which selected three to be subjected to an online public poll in October 2023. Of the 1160 votes, 43.7% were for the flag that was unanimously approved and adopted by city council Resolution 2023-047 on September 25, 2023.

The description of the flag in the city council packet:

First, you will notice this design is in red, white and blue, harkening to the colors of our national flag.

Red and blue also have unique meaning for Nixa. “Nixa Red” reminds the viewer of red Azaleas, our official city flower, and represents our passionate commitment to an exceptional quality of life and public service. "Innovation Blue" represents strength, peace, responsibility, wisdom, truth and trustworthiness.

The two parallel bars in “Innovation Blue” represent the James and Finley rivers, between which Nixa is located.

The four converging arrows in "Nixa Red" represent the place which attracts people from all around to make their home. An X in the negative space between those converging arrows marks the spot where you may find that which you treasure most. Historically, the X in the name of our city has symbolized a crossroads, it has also come to signify a multiplier of opportunity. The people of Nixa are the intangible “X factor” of our community. They are our town’s greatest asset. Our potential for forward progress comes from their vision and determination.

The white background represents the opportunity anyone has in Nixa to pursue life, liberty, and happiness. It also represents their opportunity to shape our community’s future, a proverbial “blank slate”.

From: https://www.nixa.com/community/design-contest:

Nixa City Council has selected a winner in the contest to redesign the City of Nixa seal and flag. The winning designs were unveiled at the Nixa State of the Community Dinner held at Nixa Junior High School on November 2nd. Tracy Southard will receive the $1,000 prize for her designs.

The city received 29 entries from students, professionals, locals and from as far away as Delaware. Council narrowed the designs down to 6 finalists without knowing anything about the designers. Finalists all had the opportunity to refine their works based on individualized feedback and general guidelines. The 2nd round entries were highly competitive and council finally selected a winner at a special council meeting on November 1.

In order to create more consistent branding, all of the finalists incorporated some element from the City of Nixa official logo which was created by Identity Image Consulting and adopted by the city in July 2011. Tracy Southard will also be recognized and the new seal and flag will be formally adopted at the November 27th council meeting. The Nixa Police Department will soon update their shoulder patches to reflect the new seal design incorporated at the center.
