The flag is made of a scene showing a sun rising over the land and the St. Mary's River. In the center is a translucent depiction of Sugar Island itself, which is coterminous with the township itself. On the river is the township's name and establishment year of 1842, and at the very bottom is Michigan's state name in translucent white.
The image of the flag was provided by the township clerk.
