The flag

Town of Rogersville, Alabama, now has a flag: www.timesdaily.com/article/20100605/news/100609871?Title=Looking-to-the-future.

"Having grown up in Rogersville, Morris Lentz wouldn't dream of leaving. My roots are deep here, and I'm extremely proud of what a town this size has accomplished," he said. When residents were asked to develop a new slogan for the town, Lentz had no difficulty developing the phrase that would help rebrand the East Lauderdale community. The motto, "Rich in tradition, focused on the future" will appear on the new flag and as part of the town's seal, all of which were unveiled in a ceremony Friday.

Jana Whitley, of Rogersville, designed the flag. "My past is where I got the history part," Lentz said. "While Rogersville is a small town and it has a small-town atmosphere, it's also very progressive as evidenced by the numerous businesses that have opened in the community and the expansion of the industrial park."

In addition to the slogan and flag, a city seal, which is a reworking of the flag design, a cookbook and five new postcard designs were displayed at the event. "It was another way we could unify the town and get residents involved in what we wanted to do and what has made us successful," Mayor Richard Herston said of the rebranding efforts by the town. "We wanted to present Rogersville for the way it feels now, but we also wanted to include our history and traditions." The flag design, for instance, includes a paddle wheel for TVA, a cotton boll for the town's history of cotton farming as well as a tiger head in honor of Lauderdale County High School, Herston said. In addition to recipes, the cookbook will include bits of the town's historical information. The postcards will feature some of the more prominent sites in Rogersville. As part of the Alabama Tourism Department's Year of Small Towns and Downtowns, Herston said the city will be dedicating its historical marker today in Heritage Park. "Few towns our size take time to do this kind of stuff," he said. "Rogersville is full of life, and I'm just proud to be one of its citizens.""
