About the Flag

It is a fairly typical Portuguese municipal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a field quarterly (meaning town rank) of red and yellow (see left flag image above) or yellow and red (see right flag image above).

Coat of arms

[Celorico da Beira municipality CoA] image by Sérgio Horta, 31 Aug 2014

The coat of arms is sable, over a castle or masoned sable with port and windows sable, an eagle or, holding a fish argent, under five eight pointed stars or set in quincunx, the middle one inside a crescent or pointing dexter. Mural crown argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black upper case letters "CELORICO DA BEIRA", reported 1999 (see left flag image above).
In another variant the castle has port and windows Gules, the eagle is proper (i.e. brown) and stars and crescent are Argent (see right flag image above).
Please note that the usual depictions of this coat of arms show these unusal eight pointed stars, as if made of two superimposed squares, one rotated 45°. Note also that there should be something red on the arms, so that colour could be used in the background (the eagle’s beak and/or claws?), but the source image was too undetailed.
António Martins-Tuválkin, 22 Aug 1999

Flag and arms were approved on 30 August 1935
