About the flag

Austevoll municipality is situated in Hordaland county.

The fishing industry is the most important industry to the island community of Austevoll, and it is only natural that this should be reflected in its symbols. Actually, before considering adopting arms and a flag, Austevoll used a herring as a logo for three decades. Therefore it was decided that the flag should contain four white herrings, arranged diagonally facing the hoist, on a field of blue. The colours reflect those of the sea and the fisheries, the herring being known as the silver of the sea. The flag was approved in Royal resolution of 30 November 1984, and was designed by John Digernes.
