Kish Island, known as Persian Gulf Pearl, is an oval island with the area of 89.7 km2 (156 km x 7 km). Kish is located in south west of Bandar Abbass.
In 1970 Kish Island was visited by an Iranian-American committee; suitable geographical and strategic location led to the establishment in 1972 of the Kish Free Zone Organization in order to attract tourists.
Kish Free Zone Organization aimed at developing the touristic area in Kish Island on the model of Hawaii and southern part of Mediterranean Sea islands with a large investment, which was completed before the revolution. After victory of the revolution, the Kish Free Zone Organization was stopped.
In March 1980 the Revolution Council passed a new legislation for trading and developing the southern area by new custom tariff conditions. However the difficulties in the following years of the revolution did not permit this legal authority to act. Finally in 1989 the Council of Ministers proclaimed Kish Island as a free zone area in order to import, export, re-export and produce commodities; from that time financial activities resumed in Kish Island. Eventually in 1992 a new life was given to the island by launching the Kish Free Zone Organization and the age of fast development began.
