The municipality of Orestiada (formerly, Nea Orestias, Νέα Ὀρεστιάς; 37,695 inhabitants in 2011; 96,750 ha) was formed in the 2011 local government reform by the merger of the former municipalities of Kyprinos (Κυπρίνος, 2,915 inh.), Orestiada (23,584 inh.), Trigono (Τρίγωνο, 6,656 inh.) and Vyssa (Βύσσα, 8,184 inh.).

Orestiada is less than 100 years old. In ancient times, there was a small settlement on this site which legends claim was founded by Orestes, the son of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. Ancient Orestiada was located in present day Turkey. Nea Orestias or New Orestiada was founded in 1922/23 when the population exchange occurred between Turkey and Greece, in which river Evros became the new border between the two countries.
