Presentation of Seltz

The municipality of Seltz (3,163 inhabitants in 2018; 2,100 ha) is located 50 km north-east of Strasbourg.

Seltz emerged as Saliso, a Celtic settlement located near a crossing of the Rhine; the Roman castrum Saletio was mentioned in the Notitia Dignitatum about 425. Later a part of the German Duchy of Swabia, the area was granted by Emperor Otto I to his wife Adelaide of Burgundy in 968. Saint Adelaide established Selz Abbey in 991 and died here eight years later.
In 1357 Emperor Charles IV of Luxembourg raised Selzt to an Imperial Town, which subsequently joined the Decapolis. Seltz, however, lost its status in 1418, when it was seized by Elector of the Palatinate Louis III of Wittelsbach. Seltz was eventually annexed by France in 1680.
