Presentation of the Principality of Laàs-en-Bérn

The municipality of Laàs (139 inhabitants in 2019; 646 ha) is located 50 km north-west of Pau.
The village is notable for its self-declared secession from France as the Principality of Laàs en Béarn. The mayor of Laàs, Jacques Pédehontaà, first proposed the idea in August 2011 to protest against the administrative reforms of the French government. First registered as a non-profit association, the principality officially declared its independence on 1 January 2015. Among the achievements of the principality, a Hollywood Walk of Fame-like boulevard, a Grand Prix of wheelbarrows, the perpetuation of a local music festival...

Flags of the Principality of Laàs-en-Bérn

The original flag of the Principality of Laàs-en-Bérn (photo, photo, photo) was the flag of Béarn with a red triangle at the hoist including a blue star. The current flag, adopted in July 2015, is of a similar design, with 11 yellow and white stripes in the field and the addition of the principality's logo in red to the star (photo, photo, photo, photo).
