Presentation of Cármenes

The municipality of Cármenes (403 inhabitants in 2009; 15,422 ha; municipal website) is located in the north of León Province, 45 km of León. The municipality is made of the villages of Almuzara, Campo, Canseco, Cármenes (capital), Felmín, Genicera, Gete, Getino, Lavandera, Pedrosa, Piedrafita, Piornedo, Pontedo, Rodillazo, Tabanedo, Valverdín and Villanueva de Pontedo.

The "Cordel de Cármenes" (Cármenes transhumance trail) linked the town of León to the Pass of Piedrafita along the valley or river Torío. The shepherds usually spent the night with their cattle near the chapel of Robles; the next day, they crossed Rodillazo, Gete, Getino, Cármenes, Villanueva, Pontedo and Piornedo before heading to the Pass of Piedrafita.
